The Demon Dog of Valle Crucis is said to haunt the courtyard of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Valle Crucis, North Carolina. Legend of this Hellhound have been passed down for years and the church itself is said to be haunted by a priest who had hung himself in the 1990s, however the church protests this local rumor and says that he died from cancer in 2001. In the nearby cemetery there is said to live the ghost of a woman and at times one can hear phantom gunshots and screams.
The story of the Demon Dog began when two men were on a drive down the highway, passing the church. As they passed an old graveyard, a shadow reportedly jumped out in front of their car. They swerved to avoid it and upon stopping on the shoulder of the road, the driver looked back at what they had almost hit. He reported it was an enormous black dog - at least as tall and wide as a grown man, with huge yellow fangs, deep black fur and glowing red eyes. Nothing like the reflective eyes of a normal dog, the driver said. When the dog began walking toward their car, the driver immediately stepped on the gas and sped down the road. Looking in the mirror, he saw the beast was easily keeping up with the car’s speed as it soon hit 70 miles per hour. As the legend goes, the demon hound stopped suddenly when the car passed over a bridge. As soon as two rivers met to form a cross. While the story may just be a simple urban legend, people are definitely on edge when crossing by this church.
