In April 1977, three teenagers in Dover, MA, claimed to have had three separate encounters with a creature, over the span of two days. The creature was later dubbed the Dover Demon by Cryptozoologist, Loren Colemen, who was the first to interview the witnesses. The three teenagers, Bill Bartlett, John Baxter and Abby Brabham each provided a sketch of what they believe they saw; each were interviewed separately.

The first sighting took place at 10:30pm on April the 21st. While driving with two friends, Bill Bartlett noticed something on an adjacent wall to the car, which he believed was a cat or a dog. When the cars headlights illuminated the figure, he and only he, saw a creature, 3 to 4 feet tall with an oversized oval head, a thin body and long fingers. He only saw it for a few seconds before it was gone. On Bill’s sketch of the creature (image one) he also added "I Bill Bartlett swear on a stack of bibles that I saw this creature.“

The next sighting happened April 22nd just after midnight, when John Baxter was walking home from his girlfriend’s house. A mile or so into his walk, Baxter saw a figure approaching in front of him, he believed at the time that it was a friend who lived on his street named M.G. He called out to the figure with no response. He called out again as the shadow got closer, still no reply. He then watched as the figure ran from him, down a gully and onto the other side of the hill. Baxter followed and saw the silhouette of the creature, whose head he described as a ‘figure eight’ (image 2), with feet that moulded around a rock, like Bartlett had also described.

The final sighting also occurred on the 22nd, when Abby Brabham was driving home with her boyfriend. In the headlights before them, Abby noticed a small creature on all fours. She described it as having a tan coloured body, with a large head, oval in shape, and no nose or mouth that she could see (image 3). Her boyfriend (Will Taintor) also saw the creature but only briefly.

Some say the Dover Demon was actually a baby moose, which almost seems less realistic than if it was real. Others believe the Demon was a hoax, as the teenagers all knew each other, Bartlett being close friends with Brabham’s boyfriend. There is no way of knowing if it was hoax, just as there is no real way of saying it was real, all in all though, their encounters make for great, and unsettling recollections.
